The Yaybahar is the invention of Trukish musician, Gorkem Sen. It consists of a Y-shaped frame attached to an upright neck. It has a single string attached to the neck which is played with a bow. There are two long, loose springs that run from the neck to a pair of rum skins at the far ends of the Y formation. The springs resonate when the string is played and are amplified by the drum skins. The result is a highly reverberant, echoey sound suitable for ambient music and background atmospheric work. Videos posted online demonstrate what a beautiful instrument this is, and a perfect excuse I have to pack my bags and head off to Turkey any day and buy one!
